Summer Food Trends
We are fast approaching Easter and the much-celebrated bank holiday weekend where people like to get involved in the festivities and celebrations. Warmer weather is on the horizon and it has us, at Seven, thinking of what trends there will be for this Summer.
There is going to be a mix of what people are looking for in a diet this Summer, especially with supply chain issues and food shortages still a factor. The devastating war in Ukraine, COVID lockdowns in Asia and driver shortages are issues we are plagued with and they will all have an impact on the trends, we are likely to see going into the warmer months.
According to a recent Lending Tree survey, it found that 55% of consumers are more willing to spend extra on environmentally friendly and sustainable products. With restaurants struggling to buy in the the same amount of meat as they normally would, chefs are turning to meat alternatives and vegetarian dishes on the menu and this is going to continue to rise throughout the summer.
With a big drive on looking after our seas, there is now a push for fishless fish in both restaurants and supermarkets, which has been a relatively unsuccessful product up until now, but with an increasing need for it, food providers are only going to invest more money into making the product better.
Global spices are hitting the social media pages ahead of Al Fresco dining, BBQ and garden parties which are all on the horizon. Indian, Thai, Korean and African spices are all prevalent already and are only going to become more noticeable across plates at home and in hospitality venues. With people wanting to find new ways of adding some exotic tastes to their dishes. African cuisine is looking like hitting the mainstream this summer, as it grows into having a reputation of having big-hitting flavours and can be used to cater for pretty much any diet preference such as traditional meat-eaters, pescatarians and vegetarians.
Our drinking habits are changing and a lot more people are going to be turning to non-alcoholic beverages this summer. The mix of having fun without alcohol, the health benefits and the expansive range of flavours now on offer have flung people towards this particular bandwagon and we will see a boom for the mocktail and low/no alcohol beers. Companies pushing the mocktails this year will be advertising with BBQs and garden parties as they see a gap in the market.
