Even though the meat industry continues to face pressure due to Covid-19 and lockdown, sales of
beef and lamb have increased.
This was partly due to the closure of food service markets such as restaurants, hotels and pubs.
Consumers have therefore been buying more red meat for consumption at home. For the period of
12 weeks to mid-May 2020, spending on beef increased by almost 27% on the previous year.
Looking at the data, consumers purchased more each time they shopped and also increased the
frequency of their shopping trips. This was likely helped by the warmer weather the UK has been
experiencing. The weather this week is looking to be warmer than many other foreign countries, with
sales of red meat looking set to increase as it is prime BBQ weather.
The increase is not limited to beef with sales of lamb also increasing by as much as 7%.
