It is no surprise that during the last couple of months the requirement for online grocery shopping
has increase dramatically.
With social distancing put in place back in March, this forced all the major supermarkets to restrict
the number of shoppers inside their stores. The result of this was for the consumer to look online to
have their shopping delivered to their home.
All the supermarkets struggled initially to keep up with the demand, which was understandable.
Nothing like this had ever happened before and there wasn’t an overnight solution.
As the weeks have gone by supermarkets have increased the number of available delivery
slots with the aim of prioritising vulnerable consumers.
Increasing delivery slots has a knock on effect, adding additional pressure to the local
store which packs the produce for delivery. Additional employees were taken on to keep up with
demand, but with these additional deliveries comes the issue of storage prior to delivery, particularly
for chilled or frozen produce.
