Hot on the heels of last week, with the news of Amazon opening their new stores, there are another
couple of stories from the Grocery high street.
Iceland has officially opened its brand new convenience format called ‘Swift’.
The trial store opened in Newcastle last week which is designed to provide an easy to shop grocery
store with the emphasis on “Fast. Fresh. Local”.
The new store offers a far greater range of products than the former Iceland store, which was on the
same site, with nearly 3,000 lines across grocery, chilled, fresh, frozen, alcohol and food to go. If
the trial proves successful then this new format could be rolled out to almost 1,000 stores around the UK.
Also in the news last week was the Co-op has reportedly set out plans to double its franchise estate
to 30 stores by the end of this year.
The Co-op sees the agility of the franchise model as allowing them to open more stores where it wouldn’t
The new franchises will offer all of the Co-op range from the extensive food to go range, sandwiches,
drinks and pastries from an in-store bakery.
