With the temperatures gradually increasing this weekend we should all take note of what to expect early next week;
Population-wide adverse health effects experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to serious illness or danger to life. Government advice is that 999 services should be used in emergencies only; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.
Substantial changes in working practices and daily routines will be required
High risk of failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment, potentially leading to localised loss of power and other essential services, such as water or mobile phone services
Significantly more people visiting coastal areas, lakes and rivers, leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents
Delays on roads and road closures, along with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel, with significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays
Due to the above information, we are advising all users of temporary cold storage to think about how to use their cold storage. We recommend the following;
Keep the doors closed between 9 am and 4 pm during the extreme heat warning
If you have to open the door keep the actual length of time the door is open as short as possible
Do not open the door multiple times in quick succession
When opening the door place the machine on a manual defrost cycle
Imagine a container set for -20c with the ambient temperature hitting +40c there is then a differential of 60 degrees!! Therefore every time the door is opened the high ambient air will rush in. The door is then closed, and the machine then has to work to bring that interior air temperature back down to -20c. This is fine if the door is then kept closed for the next 4-5 hours, however, repeated door openings in quick succession will make this almost impossible for the machine to maintain the set point set.
We love the warm, hot weather too, but keeping the doors closed during the hottest part of the day will help maintain your stock at the correct temperature.
