The wait is over as Amazon launches two of its Fresh format stores in the UK within a week of each other.
After months of rumours as to when Amazon would launch its physical grocery stores in the UK, it has opened
the first in Ealing, West London on 4th March and within a week a second store opened in Wembley Park.
Both stores are equipped with Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology where customers scan a QR Code on entry
and simply select their shopping and walk out of the store, there are no cashier tills. The shopping is then
charged to their Amazon account.
The stores will also be stocking Amazon’s private grocery line ”by Amazon”, which features a range of everyday
goods including meat, poultry, fruit, veg and hot food cooked on site.
As more Amazon Fresh stores are due to open across the UK there are more rumours circulating that Amazon is
expected to “acquire a major British supermarket chain” in the coming months too. This move would certainly
be a pivotal moment in the history of the UK grocery market.
